රත්නපුර, ජනවාරි 3 වන දා – ඊයේ කඳු මුදුනට හිරු පායපු හැටි නම් හරිම අගෙයි. ඒත් හැමදාමත් එහෙම නැහැ. ක්‍රමක්‍රමයෙන් මහා වළාතීරය මැකී යන අතර වාරේ, නැගෙනහිර අහසින් “අරුණෝදයේ උදාව” සනිටුහන් වෙනවා. සිකුරු තරුවත් ඊට උඩින් බැබළි බැබළි උන්නා. දකුණු කුරුසය තාරකා මණ්ඩලයත් බැලිය හැකියි. ඒ අසලම තවත් තාරකා මණ්ඩල එකක් දෙකක් දකින්න තිබුනා. ඊට ඉහළින් අඬ සඳ දෘෂ්‍යමාන වුනා.
හිරු නැගෙනා හිමිදිරිය
කලු අට්ටාල සහිත ප්‍රාකාරයක් ඇති බලකොටුවක් වගේ තමයි අප වටා තිබුනු පහත් කඳු මුදුන් දිස් වුනේ. ඈත ක්ෂිතිජ ඉමේ වලා කැටිති රාශියක් උදෑසන හිමිදිරි ආලෝකය වැදිලා මිටියාවතේ මීදුම් අතරින් ඉහළට නගිනවා. ඒ අතර පහත් බිම් තවමත් අවිධිමත් පොකුණු සහ ගංගා වගේ පේන සුදු ඝන මීදුමකින් අඩවශයෙන් හැංගිලා. හරියට පළමු සහන් එළියෙන් දකින වතුර වගේ. මහා විශාල අවානක් වගේ උදා හිරුගෙන් විහිදෙන අරුණාලෝක කිරණ ඔටුන්න හරිම ප්‍රශස්ත දර්ශනයක්.
මුතු වැනි දීප්තිමත් වර්ණයන්ගෙන් යුතු මේ මහා ආලෝක කදම්බ, අහසෙහි මුඳුනේ ස්වර්ගය ආසන්නයටම ළඟා වෙනවා වගේ. ක්ෂිතිජ රේඛාවේ ඇති මීදුම හන්දා අපට මුහුද නම් පේන්නේ නැහැ. ඒ වගේම කිසිම වාසස්ථානයක හෝඩුවාවක් පේන්නෙත් නැහැ. ඒත් මහා වනාන්තරයෙන් වැහුණු කඳු පන්තියි, පලාවන් පැහැ පොල්ගස් ගොන්නකින් සම්පූර්ණයෙන් ආවරණය වුණු ඈත තැනිතලා නම් දකින්න පුළුවන්.
මීදුම් සෙවනැල්ල සහ තවත් කතා
හිරු උදාවෙන් සිරිපා කඳු මුදුනේ සෙවණැල්ල මීදුම මතට වැටෙනවා. එය බොහොම ප්‍රකට උත්කර්ෂවත් අවස්ථාවක්. හිරුගේ පෘථුල බවට ස්තූති වන්ත වෙන්න, එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස පූර්ණ ඡායාවක් සහ දෙපස උපඡායාවන් ලෙස සෙවණැල්ලක් උපදිනවා. පූර්ණ ඡායාව හරිම අඳුරු උල් වූ ස්වභාවයක් ගන්නවා. කඳු මුදුනටත් වඩා උල් ගතියක් තියනවා.
මම පුදුම වුනේ ඒක එච්චර ඈතකින් පෙනුනේ කොහොමද කියලා. හරියට ඈත ගිරිකූටයන් අතරේ ඇති සෙවණැලි කන්දක් වගේ. සූර්‍යාගේ ආගමනයත් සමඟම එය ටිකින් ටික පහතට වැටිලා අතුරුදහන්වෙලා යනවා.
සිරිපා ගිරි මුදුනටම විශේෂ වෙච්ච අද්භූත දෙයක් ගැන කතාවක් මට කොහෙදි හරි අහන්න ලැබුනා. මේක බැතිමතුන්ගෙ භක්තියටම කියන රැවටිලි කතාවක් වෙන්නත් පුළුවන්. මේ වගේ නන්නාඳුනන තැනක ඉතින් මිනිස්සු දැකලා හුරුපුරුදු දේවලුත් විශේෂ විදිහට දකිනවනේ. ඇත්තටම මේ කියන දේ නිවසේ ඕනෑම දවසක බලලා තහවුරු කර ගන්න පුළුවන්. කතාවෙන් කියන්නේ තණකොළ උඩ පින්න හරි වැහි බින්දු හරි රැඳිලා තියන වෙලාවක, හිරුත් මුදුන් වෙලා නැතිනම්, ඔබ තණකොළ උඩ වැටිල තියන ඔබේ හිසේ හෙවණැල්ල දිහා බැලුවොත් ඒ වටා සුදු ආලොකයක් විභූතිමත් වෙලා තියනවා දකින්න පුළුවන්ලු. මම හිතන්නේ හිරුගේ ආලෝකය, හිරුත් හිසත් හාවෙන හෙවණැල්ලේ රේඛාව ආසන්නයේ රැඳී තියන කුඩා ජල බින්දු වල අභ්‍යන්තර පෘෂ්ඨයෙන් කෙළින්ම පරවර්තනය වීමෙන් තමයි මේ තත්වය නිර්මාණය වෙන්නේ. මේ පරාවර්තනය වුනු ආලෝකය සෙවණැල්ලේ අඳුරු කලාපයකින් ඇසට ඇතුල් වෙන්න ඕනෑ නිසා කිසිම සැකයක් නැතිව මේ කාරණේ තමයි සිද්ධ වෙන්නේ. කොයි හැටි වුවත්, මොන හේතුව වුනත්, මේක නම් කාට හරි පුහු නම්බුවක් අරගන්න පුළුවන් වෙලාවක්. ඔබත් එක්ක කවුරු හරි සහචරයෙක් ඉන්නවනම් මේ ශ්‍රී විභූතිය ඔහුගේ හිස වටා නැති නමුත් ඔබ වටා තියන, එහෙනම් ඔබගේ වෙලාව හොඳයි!
මම එක් වරක් බොහොම ධනාත්මක විදිහට හිතන පතන හොඳ මොළකාරයෙකුට ඔහුගේ හෙවණැල්ලේ විතරක් නෙවෙයි මේ ප්‍රභාමණ්ඩලය හැබෑවටමත් හිසවටා තියනවා මට පේනවයි කියලා පිස්සු වැට්ටුවා. ඔහුට ඇත්තටම මා වටා ඒ වගේ ආලෝකයක් දැකගන්න බැරි වුන හන්දා වෙනත් විකල්පයකුත් තිබුනේ නැති හන්දා අන්තිමට තීරණය කරගත්තා ශුද්ධ වූ භූතයෙක් ඔහුව විශේෂයෙන්ම වසාගෙන ඉන්නවා කියලා!
ශ්‍රී පා සලකුණ
ශ්‍රී පාදය, මා බලාපොරොත්තු වුනාට වඩා හොඳ තැනක්. අඩි පහක් වගේ දිගට (කපිතාන් නොක්ස් මෙය පවසා ඇත්තේ “අඩි දෙකක් දිගය” කියාය. පෙනෙන විදිහට නම් ඔහු එය හැබැහින් දැකලා නැතුවා වගේ.) අඟලක් වගේ ගැඹුරුවට ගල්කුලේ ස්වභාවිකවම කුහරයක් සැකසිලා. ඈතට පෙන්නේ පා සලකුණක් වගේ. නමුත් ඔවුන් සමහර අඩමාන දාර කොටස් දිගේ බදාම ආලේප කරලා සකස් කරලා වගේ. පා ඇඟිලි නම් සලකුණු වෙලා නැහැ. නමුත් බෞද්ධ විහාරස්ථාන වල ඇති මෙහි පිටපත් වල මා දැක තියනවා හොඳින් පැහැදිලිව සලකුණු කල පා ඇඟිලි. මේ සලකුණ පුදුමෙකට වගේ පිහිටුවලා තියෙන්නේ අඩි කිහිපයක විතර කොටුවක, පා සලකුණටත් කොටුව මත තනා ඇති සුළඟට විවෘත කුඩා මණ්ඩපයකටත් විතරක් ඉඩ තියෙන්න හරියටම කඳු මස්තකයෙ අග්‍රස්ථානයේමයි.
කඳු මස්තකයේ මණ්ඩපය සහ භික්ෂූණ්
ඊට ටිකක් පහළින් තියන ස්වභාවික වේදිකාව වටා අනතුරු වළක්වා ගන්න (කන්ද සෑහෙන්න බෑවුම්) ප්‍රාකාරයක් බැඳ තියනවා. මේ වේදිකාව මත අපූරු දේවල් කිහිපයක් තිබ්බා. වේදිකාව හතර කොනේ ඇති නෙළුම් මල් රටා සහිත පැරණි පිත්තල ලාම්පු හතරට අමතරව ඝණ්ඨාරයක්, කුඩා පිළිමගෙයක් සහ කලින් සඳහන් කල භික්ෂු ආවාසය තියෙන්නේත් මේ ස්වභාවික පර්වත වේදිකාව මත. අලුයම උදා උනායෙන් පස්සේ මං මේ ආවසයට ගිහිල්ල එබිලා බැලුවා. ගෘහ භාණ්ඩයක් කියල කියන්න පුළුවන් දෙයක් නම් එහි තිබුනේ නෑ. ඒත් ආවාසෙ මැද්දේ ලොකු තැටියක දර කොටන් දැවෙමින් තිබුනා. ඒ වටේට කෙසඟ සිරුරු තුනක් ඇනතියා ගෙන වාඩි වෙලා සිටියා. ඔවුන් සතු සබ්බ සකල දේපළම ලේන්සුවක ඔතලා ගැටගහලා වහලේ එල්ලලා තිබුනා.
කැලිබන්ගේ පූජාව
භික්ෂූණ්ගේ මුදලට ඇති දැඩි ගිජුකම නිසා කන්ද උඩ රැඳි සිටීම අප්‍රියජනක වුනත්, මං කලින් කිව්ව කුඩා පිළිමගෙට කැලිබාන් වතාවත් කරන හැටි බලාගන්න ඕනෑ හන්දා ආපසු ගමන මම ටිකක් පමා කලා. ඔහු ගිනිමැලයෙන් ගිනි අඟුරු ටිකක් අරන් ඇවිත් එයට කට්ටකුමංජල් ඉහලා, දැල්වූ කපුරුයි වෙඩි ලුණු වගේ මොනවදෝයි, හොඳ සුවඳක් එන්න සුගන්ධී දියරයකුයි මේ අඟුරු මතට වක්කෙරුවා.
බොහොම පෞරාණික ගැට ගැසී ඇඹරී දඟර ගැසුනු, අඩි විස්සක් තිහක් උස, මල් පිපිච්ච (තද රතු පාට) මහරත්මල් ගස් පෙළක් පැළුම් සහ කුහර අස්සේ මුළු ගල් පර්වතය පුරාම මුල් ඇදලා තිබුනා. ඔවුන් කියන විදිහට කවදාවත් මෙහාට හිම වැටෙන්නේ නෑ. ඒත් සමහර වෙලාවට වැටෙන අළුපාට තුහින ස්වදේශිකයන් හිම කියලා වරදවා වටහාගන්නවා. මම හිතන්නේ නෑ ඒ රාත්‍රියේ උෂ්ණත්වය ෆැරන්හයිට් 500ට වඩා අඩු වුනයි කියලා. ඒත් සීතල නම් අගේට දැනුනා. පහත් බිම් වලදි දැණුනු රස්නෙත් එක්ක නම් පුදුම සීතලක්.

CHAPTER IV: ADAM’S PEAK AND THE BLACK RIVER.
Ratnapura, Jan. 3rd.—Sunrise yesterday on the peak was fine, though “sunrises” are not always a success. The great veil of clouds gradually dissolved, and a long level “rose of dawn” appeared in the eastern sky—Venus brilliant above it, the Southern Cross visible, and one or two other crosses which lie near it, and the half moon overhead ; a dark, peaked and castellated rampart of lower mountains stretched around us, and far on the horizon were masses of cumulus cloud rising out of the lowland mists, and catching the early light ; while the lower lands themselves remained pardy hidden by irregular pools and rivers of white fog, which looked like water in the first twilight. A great fan-like crown of rays preceded the sun, very splendid, of pearly colors, with great beams reaching nearly to the zenith. We could not see the sea, owing to mists along the horizon, nor was any habitation visible, but only the great jungle-covered hills and far plains shrouded in the green of coco- nut groves.
The shadow of the peak Itself, cast on the mists at sunrise, is a very conspicuous and often- noted phenomenon. Owing to the sun’s breadth, the effect is produced of an umbra and penumbra ; and the umbra looks very dark and pointed—more pointed even than the peak itself I was surprised to see how distant it looked—a shadow-mountain among the far crags. It gradually fell and disappeared as the sun rose.
There is another phenomenon which I have somewhere seen described as peculiar to Adam’s Peak ; though this must be a pious fraud, or one of those cases of people only being able to see familiar things when they are in unfamiliar surroundings, since it is a phenomenon which can be witnessed any day at home. It is that if when there is dew or rain upon the grass, and the sun is not too high in the heavens, you look at the shadow of your head on the grass, you will see it surrounded by a white light, or ‘ glory.’ It arises, I imagine, from the direct reflection of the sunlight on the inner surfaces of the little globules of water which lie in or near the line joining the sun and the head, and is enhanced no doubt by the fact that the light so reflected shows all the clearer from having to pass through a column of shadow to the eye. Anyhow, whatever the cause, it is quite a flattering appearance, all the more so because if you have a companion you do not see the ‘ glory ‘ round his head, but only round your own ! I once nearly turned the strong brain of a Positivist by pointing out to him this aureole round his head, and making as If I could see It. He of course, being unable to see a similar light round mine, had no alternative but to conclude that he was specially overshadowed by the Holy Ghost!
The sripada—”sacred foot”—is better than I expected : a natural depression in the rock, an inch or so deep, five feet long, of an oblong shape, and distantly resembling a foot (Captain Knox, above quoted, speaks of it as “about two feet long ” ; but he does not appear to have actually seen it.); but they have ” improved ” it in parts by mortaring bits of tile along the doubtful edges ! There are no toes marked, though In ” copies ” of It that I have seen In some Buddhist shrines the toes are carefully indicated. The mark is curiously situated at the very summit of the rock—which is only a few feet square, only large enough, in fact, to give space for the foot and for a little pavilion, open to the winds, which has been erected over it ; and on the natural platform just below—which (so steep is the mountain) Is itself encircled by a wall to prevent accidents—are some curious bits of furniture : four old bronze standard lamps, of lotus-flower design, one at each corner of the platform, a bell, a little shrine, and the priests’ hut before mentioned. Looking into the latter after dawn, I beheld nothing resembling furniture, but a pan In the middle with logs burning, and three lean figures squatted round It, their mortal possessions tied in handkerchiefs and hanging from the roof.
The priests were horribly on the greed for money, and made it really unpleasant to stay on the top ; but I delayed a little in order to watch Caliban doing poojah at the little shrine I have mentioned. He brought a hot ember from the fire, sprinkled frankincense on it, burned camphor and something that looked like saltpetre, also poured some kind of scented water on the ember, causing fragrance. Very ancient gnarled rhododendron trees, twenty or thirty feet high, rooting in clefts and hollows, were in flower (carmine red) all round the top of the rock. No snow ever falls here, they say ; but there are sometimes hoar frosts, which the natives mistake for snow. I don’t suppose the temperature that night was below 50° Fahr., but it felt cold, very cold, after the heat of the lowlands.
